It's not too late

It seems summer vacation just started just a few weeks ago and now it's almost over. Have you done your summer reading? It is not too late! You have 24 days left before the first day of school - that's more than enough time to get some books from our school library, the public library or your favorite book store.

Remember, to be eligible for the HISD Millionaire Club/ Summer Reading Program incentives - you need to have read at least 5 books. Then you will need to post your comments, book reviews or recommendations here on this blog. Simply, click on the comment link and type in your post. So that you can be eligible for incentives, please let me know who you are by including your first name and last name initial only in your post.

I'm looking forward to hearing about the books you've read! Happy reading and enjoy the rest of your summer vacation!

Have you read your books yet?

We're already in July, only 6 weeks of summer vacation left, have you read any books yet?

I often hear kids say, "I'm bored" and frankly, I'm surprised. I find that there is not enough hours in the day (or night) for me to do everything I need to do - housework, errands, stuff for work, and reading! Boredom??? Who has time for that?

There is a book out there that will make you forget about time and place...that's what it means to get caught in a book - one of the best feelings in the world! So visit your public library or the local bookstore and grab a book. Take your time and browse until you find the book that is right for you!

Summer Schedule @ our Library

Summer is here and HISD's Summer Reading Program - Millionaire Club - has officially kicked off!

Reading over the summer is the best way to make sure students enter school in the fall with reading skills at or above the level they were at before leaving for summer break.

There are several ways to show you have read atleast 5 books:
1. You can turn in your reading logs to me, Mrs. Verdin when you come back in the fall.

2. Create a book trailer on Animoto, Photostory or Moviemaker and send the link to milbylibrary@gmail or post it here http://milbysrp.blogspot.com

3. Post a comment or review about the books you've read here on http://milbysrp.blogspot.com

Important announcement: The library will be open every Thursday in June for students who want to check out books, need help selecting books, want to participate in our book club or those who want to learn how to create multimedia projects on Animoto, Photostory or Moviemaker.

Multimedia Workshops will be held on:
June 9 and 16 - How to create Animoto Videos
June 23 - How to create Photostory projects
June 30 - How to create videos on Moviemaker

Whether you are a book enthusiast like me or not, there is a book that is just right for you. So visit the library and ask me to help you find the one for you!

The library will be open every Thursday from 1 - 3 pm (Yes! I am volunteering my time...so please please come out and check out a book!)

HISD Millionaire Club

 What is it?
The Millionaire Club is a coordinated effort by the Department of Library Services, the Literacy Leads the Way initiative and the Reading Department to keep HISD students reading over the summer months.
If all students read five books this summer… HISD students will have read 1 million books!

Why are we doing it?
Besides becoming better readers, students develop a love for reading, and the entire family can benefit by making reading a family activity.  Reading over the summer is the best way to make sure that students enter school in the fall with reading skills at or above the level they were at before leaving for summer break.  Students who can least afford to risk the gains made during the school year in the area of reading suffer the most from summer reading loss.

How does it work?
Students should select and read a minimum of 5 books over the summer months.  They will fill out the Reading Log which they will have received in May 2011.  In the fall, they will return the log in order to be eligible to receive recognition and prizes for participating in the Millionaire Club.
